The Nourished Roots Nutrition Approach

E

Nourish Holistically

Nutrition and wellness interventions can help you fully harness your potential. This means taking the focus away from deprivation and looking at what we can add to support the healthiest version of you. Nourishment starts with the mind, body and spirit but continues into the home, workplace, and community.

E

Support Through Goal Coaching

Real change doesn’t happen overnight. Along your wellness journey I will be there to help you identify goals for health and wellness and keep you accountable along the way. We’ll move at a pace that is right for you and keeps you motivated.

E

Plan Individually

Every person has unique needs and goals. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all plan to health. We will work together to find your individualized plan.

E

Emotional & Behavioral Problem Solving

Find nutrition solutions that beat to your own drum.

E

Look at the Roots

The human body is complex and in constant communication with itself. A functional approach to nutrition knows every sign or symptom has a root cause. I look to find and bring balance to this root cause though nourishment, not just relieving the symptoms. For example, if you had a tack in your foot, would rather look to remove the tack or take a pill for the pain?

E

Gain Hands-On Skills

Knowing what you need to do is important but knowing how is what creates change. I can tell you that your body might need more Vitamin A so you should eat more carrots and sweet potato, but if you don’t know how to incorporate or prepare those foods into a meal, it can be hard (if not impossible) to make the necessary changes. That’s why I make sure to offer services that can help you gain the skills needed to implement nutritional shifts.

Testimonials

I always considered myself to be a healthy person, then I received my lab results for my annual physical and was shocked to see I had high cholesterol and my A1C blood sugar was way off! I didn’t know what to do. The doctor was ready to prescribe medication and I knew I wasn’t ready for that. I didn’t just want a “band-aid,” I wanted to know what was throwing my numbers off. A friend suggested I talk with Sally. After a few months of working with Sally, my health is even better, I understand what I am eating and my lab results are Normal! What a difference it made to work with Sally!”

Susan E.

New York, USA

I’m so lucky to have found Sally to help me with my health problems! Sally has been extremely generous with her time, expertise and good old common sense. She has helped me to learn to manage diabetes and understand all the influences that cause and control the disease as well. In a thoroughly professional manner, Sally knows her stuff and has been a tremendous help with these many life style changes that I’ve had to make.

Brenda B.

Maryland, USA

It may sound extreme, but I know Sally saved my life! Dozens of doctors and specialists didn’t think to test for a genetic SNP that Sally felt was likely based on my symptoms. After working with Sally for several months, I’ve never felt better. I’ve recommended family and friends to her because of her incredible expertise, empathy and passion for nutrition and wellness. My healthcare bar is very high, and Sally surpassed all of my expectations.”

Kayla N.

New York, USA

“Sally has truly transformed the way I think about health, diet, and nutrition. She’s equipped me with the tools to make informed food choices and inspired me to take care of myself. She’s flexible and creative yet keeps me grounded on routine and science-based facts that help me live a healthy life! Thanks Sally!”

Hello and Welcome!

Meet Sally

Hello and welcome! My name is Sally Hammer and I am the owner of Nourished Roots. I am a credentialed Registered Dietitian with additional training in “Holistic” or Integrative and Functional Nutrition as well as Adult Weight Management.

I provide in-person and telehealth nutrition consultations as well as corporate wellness services using a holistic approach. My vision of wellness focuses on each client’s unique needs and goals. I aim to help people work towards optimal health, through health coaching, motivational support, and always taking into account the root cause of every health concern. In addition to private counseling, I love working with community groups and organizations to increase access to health and nutrition information.

My interest in nutrition sparked while volunteering in developing and underserved communities. When I saw how access to healthcare can be hard to come by and costly, I realized the immeasurable value of  preventative health. I have seen the incredible power food and nutrition can have in supporting health and managing various health conditions.

I received a B.S. in Nutritional Sciences from Penn State University and then went on to complete my Dietetic Internship at Virginia Tech. I began my career providing nutrition counseling and community nutrition education as a dietitian in New Jersey. Since then I have received the Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management Program by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Currently, I am passionately working towards the Integrative and Functional Medical Nutrition Therapy credential. I currently live in Denver, CO where I love being outdoors and enjoying the adventures of life with my husband Yoni.

You can contact me by calling (303) 209-8640 or emailing me at sally@nourishedrootsrd.com

Meet Talia

Hello! My name is Talia Adler. I am a credentialed Registered Dietitian with an educational background in psychology.

Through my holistic approach, I help others achieve optimal health by adopting healthy habits into their life while providing support, accountability and motivation. I work under the assumption that health is a lifestyle and that identifying the root cause of health issues is the key to achieving balance, serenity and wellbeing. I help you work through and embrace the challenges that you will face while working toward your goals.

During my own health journey, I have found that nutrition can be one of the most powerful tools available to prevent, limit and treat disease. This includes physical and mental health issues as the body, mind and soul are invariably connected. Many of us, myself included, struggle with stress and various mental and physical issues that hinder our experience and functionality. I have been able to overcome these challenges through nutrition, herbal medicine, mindfulness practices, nature therapy and other natural tools. I have made it my mission to help others heal just as I have.

I received a B.S. in Dietetics from the University of Northern Colorado as well as a B.A. in Psychology from the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel. I am currently doing additional integrative training that includes Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine and other holistic therapies. I have 10 years experience learning and working with other functional nutritionists and naturopaths and believe that in this field (and in life in general) one should never stop learning.

Nourish Yourself

Our NutritionPhilosophy

My approach to nutrition focuses on nourishing your whole self: body, mind, and spirit. Together we will focus on how to nourish your unique and amazing body through individualized support. First and foremost, I will listen to your story, background, goals and past barriers to better health to gain a better sense of your needs. We’ll work together toward achieving your individual goals for a happy and balanced life.

As a nutrition coach, I keep the focus on adding health — not deprivation or diets. My role is to motivate and help you succeed at a pace that works for you. Along the way we’ll develop clear and achievable goals, or action steps, for you to work on in between sessions. These goals help track your progression and make healthy lifestyle changes seem natural.

I understand there is complexity behind each individual’s needs. What works for you may be different than what works for your best friend, sister or co-worker. Whole food choices geared toward your specific needs can change your physical and mental health and are a large part of furthering your path to wellness. Through dietary monitoring and testing I am able to identify your unique nutrient and genomic (gene expression) makeup. In doing so, we can implement targeted food and nutrition interventions to optimize nutrient metabolism and lower your risk of chronic disease.

I also realize that in order to make change possible, you may need cooking and recipe support. When foods are not enough, reputable and safe supplements may be recommended to support optimal health.

Science Based Nutrition Strategies

When you meet with Sally, you can be sure you are getting the most up-to-date information on nutrition facts. While there may be contradicting articles on controversial topics, some articles may questionably funded, or promote a one-size-fits-all diet. Knowing that every body reacts to food differently, Sally knows how to locate, interpret, and deliver scientifically-sound research that applies to your personal plan.

Dietitians are also able to debunk myths surrounding food by providing up-to-date information on the big picture, including nutrients, calories, serving sizes, food groups, labels, marketing tactics, food ingredients, allergies, interactions and how food is grown, manufactured, prepared, and cooked.

02 / Prepare

Personalized Plan

No two people are exactly alike, therefore neither are their nutritional needs. Sally will work with you to find the optimal nutrition plan. Through understanding your background, food intake, and nutrition related lab work, Sally is able to help you meet your individual needs and bring you to optimal health.

03 / Get

Big Picture Emotional and Behavioral Change

Dietitians work with the personal and emotional aspects to nutrition by providing motivation and support to their clients. Because eating is so personal and often requires behavior change, it’s useful to have a trusted and resourceful health professional to talk with that will help you celebrate, solve and/or adjust any of the many things that may occur during your journey to achieving your health goals. If you find that eating healthy is too difficult in your daily schedule, Sally can help you find solutions that beat to your drum. She can provide useful resources that may assist you in reaching your full potential.

Nutrition Consultations

Sessions for Individuals and Families

Hello! My name is Sally Hammer and I am the owner and operator of Nourished Roots. I am a credentialed Registered Dietitian with additional training in Adult Weight Management as well as “Holistic” or Integrative and Functional Nutrition.

Initial Nutrition Consultations

Whether meeting virtually or in person, consultations take on the same format. Our first session together generally runs for an hour, and follow-ups are 45 minutes thereafter. During this time we’ll get to know each other; I like to get a good sense of a person’s current lifestyle, medical history, and goals. From there we work together through nutrition interventions and health coaching at a pace that works for you, generally meeting once every two weeks. At the end of each consultation, we’ll establish clear and achievable goals, or action steps, for you to work on in between sessions. These goals help us track your progression and make healthy lifestyle changes seem natural.

Dive Deeper With Functional Nutrition

After laying this foundation, we’ll then dive deeper into some of the more complex health concerns you may have. This is where my integrative and functional training comes into play. Some examples of this are Nutrigenomics (the study of nutrition’s impact on gene expression), micronutrient testing (checking cell-level deficiencies in vitamins and minerals), and analysis of a person’s specific gut bacteria/yeast to understand digestive issues, immune system function, and even mental health. I work with each individual to figure out the appropriate testing and nutrition interventions. I believe in a “food first approach,” but might also recommend reputable nutrition supplements that assist in achieving optimal health.

Part of my work occurs “behind the scenes” as I connect with labs, evaluate lab test results prior to the consultation, write reports for the client, research, and prepare personalized strategies along the way. On the client-facing side, I’ll engage through scheduled consultations and follow-up emails and calls to guide and fine-tune the process.

Nutrition Workshops

Invite us to provide nutrition lessons at your local event. Appropriate for all ages!

From cooking demos to speaking engagements, learn new tips and advice from a registered dietitian. Get better insight about your nutrition and ways to achieve optimal health.

Previous presentations include but are not limited to:

Reading a Food Label: How to decide what foods are good for you and your family.

Being an educated consumer is the first step in making healthy choices for you and your family. Labels can be overwhelming but I am here to help! How much is too much or too little? What are all these ingredients anyway? Whether you have never taken a look at the Nutrition Facts label or are a committed checker, chances are you will come away from this talk feeling empowered and educated when buying food.

Shopping on a Budget: Healthy does not have to mean expensive.

One of the most common comments I hear is that healthy eating is too expensive. I promise, you don’t have to spend your whole paycheck to eat a balanced diet. As a former Supermarket Dietitian, I’ll provide all the ins and outs of eating a delicious balanced diet without breaking the bank.

Feeding the Picky Eater: Help your child learn to love food.

So many parents get frustrated and worried about their child’s picky eating habits. I will show you how to break through that wall of frustration and gain back control at the dinner table. No more cooking multiple meals a night for the family. I will show you the first steps in helping your child become a competent, healthy eater for a lifetime to come.

Taking Back Control of Blood Sugar: Managing Type 2 Diabetes Through Nutrition

Food and nutrition have a major impact in blood sugar control. We all know we need to eat healthy to be healthy but what does that look like exactly? Learn what every person living with Diabetes should know when it comes to nourishing your body, including: how to balance your plate, superfoods for blood sugar control, meal timing, carbohydrate counting, and even herbs and supplements that can help you gain control.

Sometimes vs. Anytime Foods: Nutrition for PreSchool and Kindergarten

One of Sally’s favorite presentations teaches kids the importance of filling up on healthy anytime foods like fruits and vegetables. This presentation is hands-on and gets kids excited out eating healthy and trying new foods. Sally’s approach emphasizes balance and empowers kids to become healthy, competent eaters.

Functional Nutrition Lab Work

Taking a deeper look inside to identify your specific needs.

A functional approach is based on addressing root causes that lead to symptoms. This is an evolving process as different layers are investigated and addressed. The following labs are tools that can aid us in identifying underlying root causes.

Micronutrient (Vitamin and Mineral) Lab Work

This deep look into your cells tells us what nutrients your body is lacking to function at your optimal level. When depleted of important nutrients, we are at greater risk of acute and chronic illness. The many pathways in our bodies require these nutrients to do their job. Micronutrients help us see, heal from surgery, keep our bones strong and hormones in balance, detox waste products and chemicals, and even eliminate waste, just to name a few.

Genomic Testing

Every person is unique, even identical twins because of their genomics, or the way genes express themselves. By taking a look at your genome we can identify any Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms or “SNPs” for short. SNPs are essentially a switch in one or more of the nucleotides on the DNA chain that can prevent your body from performing optimally. Through nutrition interventions we can address many of these SNPs and make sure your body is not being held back by kinks in your genome.

Example: Someone with chronically low vitamin D who is taking vitamin D supplements and gets plenty of sun might have a SNP converting vitamin D into its active form readily available to the body. One way to address this would be to provide that person with active vitamin D. However, this distinction can only be made through lab work testing.

Gut Health and Neurotransmitter Testing

The gut is at the center of our health and immune system. It is important to address any dysbiosis, or intestinal imbalances, if we wish to support our immune system and feel our best. There are many different types of testing that help us look for bacterial, parasitic, fungal or yeast imbalances. While working together we will explore the best options based off of your signs, symptoms, and health history.

We know our gut sends messages to our brain to tell us we are full when eating, but did you know your gut and brain are in constant communication through what is called the gut-brain axis? How we feel emotionally is in part due to what is happening in our GI track. By looking at your neurotransmitters and gut health we can work on supporting mental health.

Exmaples of lab work may include*:

  • Organic Acid urine testing (home)
  • Genetic saliva testing (home)
  • Stool testing (home)
  • SIBO testing
  • Micronutrient testing (lab)
  • Metabolic Typing Test (online)
  • DUTCH hormone test (home)
  • Blood tests to assess challenges (physician)
  • And other tests as needed

*Lab fees are not included in consultation fee

She’s flexible and creative yet keeps me grounded on routine and science-based facts that help me live a healthy life! Thanks Sally!”
