Website Terminology Glossary
Cookies
Website cookies are small text files that are stored on a user’s device (such as a computer, smartphone, or tablet) by a website. They are used to store information about the user’s activities on the website, such as their preferences, login information, and shopping cart contents. Cookies can be set by the website itself, or by third-party services that the website uses, such as advertising networks or social media platforms.
Cookies can be either “session” cookies, which are deleted when the user closes their web browser, or “persistent” cookies, which remain on the user’s device until they expire or are manually deleted. Some cookies are necessary for the website to function properly, while others are used for analytics or advertising purposes.
Cookies have been the subject of controversy in recent years due to concerns about user privacy and data tracking. As a result, many websites now provide users with the option to disable or limit the use of cookies, or to opt out of tracking by third-party services.
