Website Terminology Glossary
Anchor Text
Anchor text is the clickable text in a hyperlink that is used to link one web page to another. It is important because it provides context and information about the linked page to both search engines and users.
Search engines use anchor text to understand the content of the linked page and to determine its relevance to a particular topic or keyword. For example, if a webpage has many links with anchor text that includes the keyword “web design” it may be seen as more relevant for that topic than a page with fewer links using that keyword.
Anchor text also provides important information to users who are navigating a website. It tells them what they can expect to find on the linked page and can help them decide whether to click on the link or not.
It’s important to use descriptive and relevant anchor text for hyperlinks, as this can improve the user experience and make it easier for users to find the information they need. However, it’s also important to avoid over-optimizing anchor text for search engines, as this can be seen as spammy and may result in penalties from search engines. A good balance between user experience and SEO is important when choosing anchor text.
